The summer holidays are here and there’s no better place to be than on a British beach during July and August. The sun is shining, the gently lapping sea is refreshing and you’re only ever about 100 yards away from an ice cream.

That said, this IS the United Kingdom, so you never quite know what the weather will bring. Sure, it has been consistently hot and sunny for the past couple of months but that can all change when the summer thunderstorms gather overhead!

So, what fashion essentials should you be packing for your Great British seaside getaway this year? I’ve lived by the sea for over eight years now so I’ve finally got to grips with dressing for the coastal weather. Here’s my advice for stylish pieces to stow in your suitcase:

A big beach bag

It’s got to be an essential of any holiday, right? The big beach bag is a vacation classic, whether you’re lounging by the pool or heading to a sunkissed beach. The reason it’s so iconic? Because it’s useful.

You can carry all those other beach essentials with ease; simply pop your SPF, water bottle, towel and book into your woven straw tote and take a stroll down the promenade.

Style-wise, it turns any outfit into a holiday ensemble – the woven straw texture makes me reminisce of sandy toes and sunsets. To make it an even more elevated accessory, choose a quality woven bag from an exclusive brand, such as a Loewe basket bag.

They’re made to last and, let’s face it, you only ever need to buy one basket bag and it’ll be with you for life, so why not buy well and buy once? Be sure to shop for designer pieces through a reputable and trusted website such as 24S.com, which provides authentic items from luxury brands.

A timeless trench

I’ve discussed it before, but there’s no better coat to choose than a timeless trench. In a classic cream colour, it is light enough to look summery yet will help to keep you cosy and dry if an unexpected shower arrives.

Oftentimes, I find that the breeze is the issue when strolling by the sea. I go for a walk along the prom most mornings and always make sure I have a thin jacket with me just to block out the cold winds. This is equally true in the evenings once the sun sets, making this piece an essential for UK holidays.

At least if you have a lightweight mac with you – which won’t take up too much room in your suitcase – you can carry on with your holiday plans no matter what the weather throws at you during your British coastal break.

Plus, I’ve previously shared three ways to style a timeless trench so that it works for multiple occasions from super-casual to smart events – one of which was actually going for a walk along the nearby coastline. I chose a trench from Tommy Hilfiger and showed how to dress it up to suit all weathers and seasons so hopefully this will be helpful.

Sumptuously supple sandals

It’s the holy grail; the fashion item we all need but rarely find: a comfortable pair of sandals. You know they type I mean; a flexible sole, adjustable straps, super stylish and in a tanned leather that goes with everything. I’m still on the look-out for a pair for my own seaside adventures.

Maybe they’re espadrilles or gladiators. Perhaps they have a toe-post thong or ankle straps. Whatever your style, the thing that’s absolutely essential is that they are comfortable. Like a second-skin.

That’s because you’ll inevitably be doing lots of walking during your seaside holiday, either during the day through the quaint local town or in the evening when heading to a beach bar for a tipple. So your footwear has got to be comfy. You don’t want your trip to be clouded by irritated skin and sore toes.

So, I’d recommend going for a leather pair in a go-with-everything neutral tan, black or white. These can be dressed up with a maxi in the evening or can be dressed down with just your swimwear during the day.

Get the right pair and you’ll only ever need to pack one pair of shows for your whole holiday, leaving more space in your case for adorable tea dresses and cute crochet tops.

I hope these ideas for three fashion essentials will help you when you’re packing for your next British seaside holiday. I’d love to hear what other essentials you like to take with you when staying at the coast so please leave a comment below with your top summer fashion pieces. 🙂

Wardrobe wisdom: dressing for confidence & comfort during menopause https://cassiefairy.com/2025/06/09/wardrobe-wisdom-dressing-for-confidence-and-comfort-during-menopause/ https://cassiefairy.com/2025/06/09/wardrobe-wisdom-dressing-for-confidence-and-comfort-during-menopause/#respond Mon, 09 Jun 2025 14:56:02 +0000 https://cassiefairy.com/?p=55635 Collaborative feature

As the seasons change during the year, from autumn-winter to spring-summer, that’s the time we’re most likely take a look at our wardrobe and wonder what we will wear to suit the weather.

Likewise, at different times of our lives, we might need to re-evaluate the way we dress, either for improved comfort (hello flat shoes!) or confidence (hello killer heels!).

Those times might also include a change in lifestyle and family, new employment, periods of weight loss, hormonal shifts during perimenopause or moving to a different location in the world.

All of these elements might be the catalyst to make adjustments to your usual outfits to suit the situation in order to feel more comfortable, both physically and mentally.

In today’s article, I’m sharing some handy wardrobe tips for dressing during perimenopause and menopause, and I’d love to hear your own ideas and advice in the comments at the end of the article so please do share what has worked for you, too.

If you’re not sure what stage you are on your perimenopause journey, tools like a menopause quiz can help identify specific symptoms and guide lifestyle changes, including those related to clothing choices.

Here are some simple adjustments you can make to your outfits to keep you feeling comfy, cool and confident:

Shape and style

Hormonal changes during the perimenopause change the way that your body stores fat, including where it settles on your body. This may lead to your body type completely changing and you’ll therefore have a different shape to dress.

So, if those button-front skirts no longer look cute over your tummy or the hipster jeans are just too tight on the hips, it might be time to have a look at different ways of clothing your body shape and ditch those things that have started to cling in the wrong places.

You might find that your waist is no longer the narrowest part of your body – it might be the empire line around your ribs instead. In which case, you can ditch waist-cinching belts and allow dresses and tops to skim your body.

But it doesn’t loose doesn’t have to mean un-shapely: you’ll get bonus points for choosing super-flattering pieces with an empire waistline that cinches in under the bust and flows gracefully down to a midi or knee-length.

Plus, a great way to get some shaping is with tailored items, such as blazers, trench coats and shirts, which will bring a bit of structure to the silhouette. But stay away from tight tailored trousers and pencil skirts, which may prove to be too restrictive and the waistband could dig in, making you feel uncomfortable.

Similarly, those tight jeans you’ve always chosen may prove to be too tight around the hips and stomach now. So choosing a pair with a more casual, looser fit will be more flattering and much more comfortable, allowing the air to flow around your body to keep you cooler.

Cool materials

Which brings us nicely on to staying cool. Hot flushes are a widely documented symptom of the menopause so let’s be prepared for those moments with the clothes we choose.

Of course, loose clothing is going to feel fresher than skin-tight pieces: just think about the outfits you’d wear on holiday in a hot country and that’s the kind of thing we need to be including in our everyday wardrobes too.

Floaty dresses, loose shirts and wide-leg trousers will all help to keep you a little cooler. But the main improvement you can make to stay cooler is choosing natural fabrics.

Natural fibres such as cotton, silk, linen, bamboo – and even manmade technical fabrics with cooling properties (often found in sportswear) – will help to wick moisture away from the body if you find yourself getting hot and sticky. This will keep you much more comfortable than if you’re choosing clingy elastane, acrylic and polyester.

While we might think of choosing stretch fabrics that flex with us in order to feel more physically comfortable when dressing our new body shape, it’s unlikely that this will help to keep you feeling fresh.

Instead, you can combine the benefits of stretch and stay cooler during hot moments by choosing wide-leg cotton or linen trousers with a comfy elasticated waistband for flexibility. It’s win-win. I personally always choose fresh linen or cotton clothing from Marks & Spencer, as I’ve found that their clothing is thoughtfully designed and easy to care for.

Transitional items

I have some items that get put away for the season – such as my fairisle festive jumpers in the summer and shorts in the winter – but there will be transitional items that will see you through each month and these are the ideal building blocks of a capsule wardrobe.

Likewise, there will be some transitional items you already have in your wardrobe that will still work perfectly well during perimenopause and menopause.

Firstly, let’s look at the labels and make sure we keep any item that’s pure cotton, linen, bamboo silk or even wool and cashmere. Yes, they might be thicker knits but the natural fibres will still absorb sweat and keep you feeling cooler when a hot flush hits.

Then, consider which lightweight and floaty items you already have in your wardrobe, as these will also be ideal for building a new wardrobe around. Choose those figure-skimming items and ditch the too-tight and clingy pieces.

Also, if you know you won’t be wearing them in the future, it’s time to remove them from your wardrobe and donate them. It’ll only make you feel disappointed if you’ve got a wardrobe full of pieces that you can no longer fit into or comfortably wear during the menopause.

Permission to shop

Then, we’re on to the fun section – it’s time to shop. If you’ve take out items with synthetic fibres and ditched anything too clingy, there will inevitably be a few gaps in your wardrobe, so have fun filling them!

When you shop for new pieces, choose items that will fit and flatter your new body shape to make the most of any new curves you have. And try to stick to those light, loose natural fibres and figure-skimming designs to keep you feeling comfortable and confident no matter what stage of life you’re in.

And be sure to have fun with it – choosing pieces with gorgeous colours and patterns that you love will boost your mood when you get dressed in the morning. With fluctuating hormones, mood can also be affected so why not try some dopamine dressing to keep you feeling upbeat.

I hope these ideas will help you to boost your wardrobe and be ready for any occasion during the perimenopause and menopause. Please let me know in the comments below what changes you’ve made and any brilliant clothing pieces you’ve found that have worked well for you, I’d love to hear your wardrobe hacks ands tips. 🙂

Budget-friendly ways to elevate your everyday style https://cassiefairy.com/2025/05/21/budget-friendly-ways-to-elevate-your-everyday-style/ https://cassiefairy.com/2025/05/21/budget-friendly-ways-to-elevate-your-everyday-style/#respond Wed, 21 May 2025 08:27:22 +0000 https://cassiefairy.com/?p=55489 Advertisement feature

If you fancy a wardrobe refresh, take a breath before you hit the high street with your credit card. There’s no need to shop ’til you drop in order to create a whole new look for yourself. Elevating your everyday look comes down to intention, smart styling and a few well-chosen details.

Simple changes – like improving how you layer clothes, choosing the right accessories, or updating a few staples – can make a big difference. Sometimes, investing in just one classic item can pull your entire wardrobe together. For example, choosing to buy a designer watch is not just a smart purchase; it’s an understated way to add timeless polish to your everyday outfits.

Here’s how to elevate your personal style without spending a fortune:

1. Start With Your Basics

Before you think about adding anything new, take stock of what you already have. Do you have well-fitting jeans? A classic white blouse? A comfy but structured blazer? The key to everyday style is nailing the basics—those versatile items that work across seasons and occasions.

When building this base, stick to neutral tones like white, grey, beige, navy, and black. These colours can be mixed, matched, and layered effortlessly. Even if your budget only allows for one or two new pieces, choose basics that will see heavy rotation and never go out of style, thereby bringing the cost-per-wear down to just pennies.

2. Elevate With Accessories

Accessories are the simplest and most affordable way to enhance your look. A patterned headband, a structured tote bag, or a sleek belt can turn a basic outfit into something stylish and put-together.

Jewellery and timepieces, in particular, make a subtle yet lasting impression. A quality watch adds a touch of luxury to your outfit and shows your style, even when paired with casual wear. Keep an eye out for vintage-inspired styles or minimalist designs that can transition from day to night.

According to Vogue Business, the rise of affordable, mid-range accessories has made it easier for consumers to build lasting style without overcommitting financially – an encouraging trend for those shopping on a budget.

3. Re-Think Layering

Layering isn’t just for warmth – although it does allow you to wear more of your wardrobe throughout the seasons. Ot’s also a visual styling trick that adds dimension and depth. Wearing a crisp white tee under a slip dress or throwing a denim jacket over a cosy hoodie can give your outfit structure while keeping it comfortable.

Experiment with proportions, too. Try oversized knits with skinny jeans, or cropped cardigans over maxi skirts. These contrasts can bring energy to simple combinations, making your wardrobe feel fresh without needing anything new.

4. Shop Smarter, Not More

It’s tempting to impulse-buy when you see a ‘bargain’, but it’s better to spend intentionally on items you’ll wear again and again. Before you purchase, ask: Can I wear this at least five ways? If the answer is yes, it’s likely a keeper.

Also, consider setting fashion goals, like finding the perfect pair of trousers or adding one versatile accessory per season. This reduces clutter and ensures you’re building a curated wardrobe, not a chaotic one. When I chose my timeless trench, I wanted to make sure I could wear my classic coat throughout the seasons and I discovered it would work for spring, summer and autumn when styled differently.

Budget-conscious fashionistas also rely on thrift stores, charity shops, and secondhand marketplaces. These places offer hidden gems and with a little creativity or minor tailoring, you can turn a preloved piece into a wardrobe highlight.

5. Add One Standout Piece

If you’re working with a limited budget, focus on adding one item that elevates your entire outfit. This could be a beautifully tailored coat, a vibrant structured handbag, or a standout pair of shoes.

These investment pieces don’t have to be expensive, they just need to be timeless and versatile. Choose something that reflects your personality and adds a sense of occasion to your everyday wear. One well-placed item often makes a bigger impact than a full outfit of fast fashion.

6. Create a Style Formula That Works for You

Instead of chasing trends, develop your own personal ‘style formula.’ This could be as simple as ‘shirt + midi skirt + trainers’ or ‘t-shirt + blazer + jeans.’ Once you find a combination that works for your body and your lifestyle, dressing becomes simpler and more stylish.

Repeat it with variations: different fabrics, colours, or accessories. You’ll soon find that looking polished doesn’t require effort, it just takes consistency and a little creativity.

7. Grooming and Fit Go Further Than You Think

Even the best clothes lose their impact if they don’t fit well or if they’re not cared for. Take the time to iron your shirt, clean your shoes, and sew that missing button. Tailoring your clothes, even just hemming trousers or taking in a dress, can completely change how they look on you.

Good grooming matters too. Clean nails, styled hair, and subtle makeup can elevate your look more than any item of clothing. Think of your personal presentation as the frame around your outfit, it gives everything else structure and shine.

8. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Confidence

The most stylish people aren’t always the trendiest – they’re the most confident in their choices. They wear what suits them, not what’s trending on social media.

Confidence doesn’t cost anything, but it transforms your appearance more than any handbag or jacket. When you’re proud of how you’ve styled yourself – whether in head-to-toe thrift or a favourite outfit from years ago – it shows. Stand tall, smile often, and own your style. That’s always in fashion.

Elevating your everyday style doesn’t mean spending more—it means spending smarter. Through layering, personal style formulas, intentional shopping, and subtle details, you can build a wardrobe that looks far more polished than its price tag.

It’s all about the little things: how you carry yourself, how you accessorise, and how thoughtfully you dress—even on casual days. Something that simple can reflect this mindset of everyday elegance—practical, stylish, and enduring.

Because style isn’t about what you spend—it’s about how you wear what you love. Let me know in the comments below if you have a favourite wardrobe staple that’s stood the test of time and please share your tricks for creating a put-together look on a budget, I’d love to hear your hacks! 🙂

Take one timeless trench: Styling a classic coat through the seasons https://cassiefairy.com/2025/04/11/take-one-timeless-trench-styling-a-classic-coat-through-the-seasons/ https://cassiefairy.com/2025/04/11/take-one-timeless-trench-styling-a-classic-coat-through-the-seasons/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 11:49:24 +0000 https://cassiefairy.com/?p=54965 Collaborative feature

As you can tell from the title of my website, I’m a thrifty girl. As such, I’m wholly reluctant to buy anything new if I think I can do without it. That’s why, when I choose to add a new item to my wardrobe it’ll always be a considered piece that’ll stand the test of time.

I want my wardrobe to work hard and for everything in it to be able to be worn in multiple ways for a variety of occasions. In short, I want to get my money’s worth when I buy an item of clothing.

If I can wear one coat or jacket throughout the seasons or combine it with different outfits, I’ll be able to wear it more regularly and therefore its ‘cost per wear’ decreases every time I use it.

This is why I usually ‘buy well and buy once‘ – if I spend a little more on an item to start with, I know the quality will be better, it’ll wash well and will last longer; I want to wear it for years, not just for seasons. I want it to last so that I’m not constantly throwing out and replacing clothing – my environmentally-conscious self couldn’t bear it.

And that’s another reason why I choose timeless designs such as this trench coat; if the style has stood the test of time so far, I know it’ll work for decades to come.

It’s practically an heirloom piece that can be passed down the generations because the style is so iconic – it has become a design classic that transcends seasons and trends.

So, I wanted to put this theory to the test and see if I can make my trench coat work throughout the seasons and for a variety of different occasions, simply by styling it differently. Here’s how I got on:

Spring style

Let’s start with the season we’re in now: Spring. And I’m kicking off with my usual everyday look: casual and colourful. I figured I needed to make this smart trench look relaxed enough to suit my laidback weekend style, as that’s probably when I’ll need to get the most amount of wear out of it.

I tried pairing it with classic jeans from Levi’s, a colourful tee and a pair of Adidas trainers – the pastel colour goes with everything at this time of year. This ensemble alone worked well to make the trench appear more casual and I removed the belt as I wouldn’t need to buckle up cosy in this weather.

Seeing as it was a sunny Spring day, I decided to roll up my jeans and turn back the cuffs on my trench to reveal the striped lining, which added another splash of colour and lend an even more chilled-out vibe. I think you can tell from the photos that I’m happy with the result and it’s a look I’ll be wearing lots this season. In fact, the trench has become one of my beach holiday fashion essentials.

Summer occasions

Now, the classic trench coat is a smart option BUT can it be styled for a special occasion? With weddings, christenings and anniversary parties filling our Summer schedule, I always need a smart blazer to top off my occasion outfits.

For this outfit, I donned my favourite formal summer dress; one I’d worn for my sister’s wedding a couple of years ago and for many parties and date nights since. I added my vintage-style shoes that go with every outfit and are so comfortable that I can easily dance the night away in them.

To change the look of the trench, I pushed the sleeves up and turned out the lapels, which gave it the look of a longline blazer, which is ideal for special occasions. The beige colour seems to go with everything, there wasn’t a dress in my wardrobe that it didn’t coordinate with.

For Summer occasions, you only really need a jacket to top off your outfit so that you look smart when you arrive and so that you can pull it on in the evening after the sun sets. I think this coat is ideal for this purpose and it saves me from having to buy a different blazer every time I’m invited to an event.

Autumn workwear

There are so many ways to style a trench coat so, to make it work during the Autumn, I’ve tried out a workwear look. It’s not often that I have to attend meetings in person these days, so I don’t really need to invest in a whole suit, but there are often times that I need to smarten up for an event.

On those occasions, I think the trench would do the job nicely. The epaulettes on the shoulder and the collared neckline lend a crisp look that’s ideal for going into the office. I like a monochrome outfit when the occasion calls for something smart so I added my black trousers and longline checked shirt (which is flannel, to make it feel a little more cosy and Autumnal).

This time I was pleased of the double-breasted button-up front and the matching buckled belt as I could bundle up warm, which would be ideal for an Autumn (or even Winter) commute. I was also chuffed to find a deep red lining inside the coat, which happened to coordinate well with my scarf (which I’ve had for about 10 years) and my one smart handbag.

So, as you can see, the timeless trench is an ideal addition to my wardrobe. With just a little bit of styling, it looks suitable for each of these occasions and it’s easily adaptable to wear throughout the seasons in most weathers; rolled cuffs for Spring, open for Summer and buttoned up for Autumn.

I hope my experiment has inspired you to check your own wardrobe and see what hard-working pieces would be ideal to add to make it work in all seasons. Let me know if you have a staple piece of classic clothing that you’ve worn time and again in the comments below; I’d love to hear your best buys for a timeless look and a low ‘cost-per-wear’.

6 Ways to make your everyday outfits feel extra special https://cassiefairy.com/2025/04/02/how-to-make-your-everyday-outfits-feel-special/ https://cassiefairy.com/2025/04/02/how-to-make-your-everyday-outfits-feel-special/#comments Wed, 02 Apr 2025 08:31:03 +0000 https://cassiefairy.com/?p=54866 Collaborative feature

What if you could turn your everyday outfits into something special without overhauling your entire wardrobe? Sounds like a thrifty option to me – and definitely something we can all achieve, whatever our budget.

Whether it’s adding a statement accessory or experimenting with textures, these tips will help you make the most of your existing wardrobe and turn ordinary outfits into something extraordinary.

1. Build Your Wardrobe Staples

To make everyday outfits feel special, start with a solid foundation of wardrobe staples. A staple pair of black jeans, for example, can be dressed up or down and paired with almost anything. Look for versatile pieces that never go out of style, like a well-fitted blazer, a cosy sweater or a simple white t-shirt.

These items serve as the building blocks of your wardrobe, making it easy to mix and match for effortless chic looks. When you invest in quality basics, you’ll always have something to rely on when you want to feel put-together, no matter the occasion.

2. Add Personal Touches with Accessories

Accessories are the secret weapon to transforming an everyday outfit into something unique. A statement necklace, a bold pair of earrings, or a colourful handbag can instantly elevate your look. Even something as simple as a silk scarf tied around your neck or wrist can add personality to a basic outfit.

Don’t be afraid to experiment—stack some rings, throw on a wide-brim hat, or swap out your usual handbag for something fun and unexpected. The best part? Accessories are an easy and affordable way to refresh your style without buying a whole new wardrobe.

3. Experiment with Layers

Layering isn’t just about staying warm—it’s a styling trick that can make an outfit look instantly more put-together. A classic shirt left open over a fitted tank, a structured blazer thrown over a casual dress, or a long cardigan paired with a belt can all add dimension to your outfit.

Layers let you play with different silhouettes and textures, making your look more interesting. Plus, layering is perfect for transitioning between seasons—just swap lighter layers for heavier ones as the weather changes.

4. Choose Bold Colours and Patterns

If your wardrobe feels a little dull, adding colour is an easy way to shake things up. A pop of red, a splash of mustard yellow, or a soft pastel can brighten up a neutral outfit instantly. If you’re feeling bold, try colour-blocking or mixing unexpected shades together.

Patterns are another great way to make an outfit feel special—florals, stripes, or polka dots can add personality to even the most basic pieces. If you’re not ready to commit to a full-on patterned outfit, start small with a printed scarf or a fun pair of shoes.

5. Tailor Your Clothing for the Perfect Fit

One of the simplest ways to make your everyday outfits look more polished is to ensure they fit you perfectly. A well-fitted pair of jeans or a blazer that cinches at the waist can make a world of difference.

If something doesn’t fit quite right, don’t be afraid to take it to a tailor—small adjustments like shortening sleeves or taking in the waist can make even affordable pieces look high-end.

If you’re handy with a needle and thread, try simple DIY alterations at home, like rolling up sleeves or knotting a shirt at the waist for a more tailored effect.

6. Opt for Statement Shoes

Never underestimate the power of great shoes. Even the most basic outfit—like jeans and a t-shirt—can feel instantly stylish with the right footwear. Think animal print boots, bright-coloured sneakers, or sleek loafers.

Statement shoes don’t have to mean high heels; they just need to stand out in some way, whether it’s a bold colour, an interesting texture, or a unique shape. The key is to find a balance between comfort and style so that you feel confident strutting around in them all day.

Making your everyday outfits feel special doesn’t mean you have to buy a whole new wardrobe. It’s all about styling smarter—mixing textures, layering creatively, and adding fun accessories that reflect your personality. Start with the staples you already own and find new ways to wear them.

Let me know how you’ve remixed the staples in your wardrobe for a fun new look, I’d love to hear your outfit hacks in the comments below.

Why investing in high-quality clothing saves you money https://cassiefairy.com/2025/02/14/why-investing-in-high-quality-clothing-saves-you-money/ https://cassiefairy.com/2025/02/14/why-investing-in-high-quality-clothing-saves-you-money/#respond Fri, 14 Feb 2025 10:33:32 +0000 https://cassiefairy.com/?p=54616 Collaborative feature

While some people love a wardrobe filled with inexpensive, trendy pieces; others maintain that investing in a few high-quality, timeless items is the best approach. We all know that fast fashion isn’t planet-friendly and, if you want to regularly update your wardrobe the ideal option is to shop secondhand.

But what about those pieces that are wardrobe staples? Key pieces like supportive underwear, durable boots, well-fitting jeans and a classic coat are all items that you can afford to spend a little more on because they’ll last you for years to come. Here’s why:

Longevity and Durability

The right lingerie can do more than just look good – it can boost your confidence and provide lasting comfort. Imagine buying an amazing push up bra. You paid a bit more for it than you would for a cheap, off-the-rack option, but it fits like a dream and makes you feel confident and comfortable. After countless wears and washes, it maintains its shape and support, whereas a cheaper model would usually start to lose form or even tear. This is precisely where investing in high-quality pieces pays off.

Premium-quality clothing is designed to look and feel better and also last longer. High-end items are made with better materials and more careful craftsmanship, so they are made to withstand the test of time. They are less likely to fade or lose their shape, which means you won’t need to replace them as frequently. Instead of buying a new £10 bra every few months, you can wear your £40 high-quality bra for years, ultimately saving money.

Classic Over Trendy

High-quality fashion pieces are usually designed with timelessness in mind. Designers of luxurious items aim to create pieces that will still be stylish and relevant years after the purchase, unlike fast fashion pieces that play into fleeting trends. For example, I was once given a high-quality coat by my friend and I’ve worn it every winter since – we’re talking years now, and it’s still going strong.

Investing in classic pieces like a good pair of jeans, a little black dress, or a well-tailored blazer will keep your wardrobe fresh and modern without needing constant updates. You’ll spare your wallet the cost of continually purchasing trendy pieces that will lose their appeal after a season or two.

Cost per Use

One critical concept in calculating the actual value of a fashion item is its ‘cost per use.’ This is calculated by dividing the price of the item by the number of times it’s worn. A £200 pair of leather boots might seem pricey initially, but if you take care of them and wear them 400 times over the years, that’s only 50p per use.

Alternatively, a £50 pair of boots worn ten times before they wear out or go out of style (or are so uncomfortable that you can’t bear to wear them!) has a cost per use of £5. By this measure, a more expensive high-quality item can be a lot more cost-effective in the long run than cheaper, low-quality items. Plus, a material like leather is easier to take care of compared to synthetic materials that will crack and peel easily.

The ‘cost per use’ factor was the reason I spent so long shopping for ‘the perfect’ pair of knee-high leather boots. I wanted to get my purchase right because I knew I would be wearing them for years. In fact, it’s been decades now, and they are still in great condition and are super comfortable. I can’t imagine ever needing to replace my boots, so I’m pleased I spent just a little more money initially and have benefitted from long-term savings of not needing to buy any more.

Enhanced Confidence

There’s something to be said about the impact high-quality clothing can have on your confidence and performance. Knowing you’re wearing a quality, well-fitted piece can elevate your self-esteem and make you feel more capable and confident.

There’s nothing worse than the opposite: wearing something itchy or in a synthetic fabric that makes you sweaty, or that you have to keep pulling down or adjusting because it doesn’t fit properly. Fidgeting around or having your attention distracted by how uncomfortable you feel in your clothing doesn’t create a great impression.

So, whether you’re walking into a business meeting or going on a first date, the feeling of looking and feeling your best is priceless and can yield fantastic results. I’m not suggesting buying something new specifically for occasions like these but they are the perfect time to pull on your trusty tailored blazer, knowing it will make you look great and feel confident.

Sustainability

Finally, investing in high-quality pieces contributes to a more sustainable model of fashion consumption. Fast fashion is a significant contributor to environmental waste and pollution, with tonnes and tonnes of clothing being binned and ragged every year.

By choosing durable, high-quality pieces that you can wear for years you’re not contributing to this kind of waste. Plus, your decision not to shop for fast fashion reduces the overall demand for it to be produced and directly contributes to more sustainable consumption habits, which eventually saves you and the planet resources.

Another factor to consider is that you don’t have to even buy your high-quality pieces new; you can save money on expensive pieces by shopping secondhand. You’ll get a better price on something that might otherwise have been out of your budget and you’re helping to keep more clothing in circulation. Think shopping vintage, charity shops or pre-loved online platforms.

In the world of fashion, it’s all too easy to be lured by the allure of cheap, trendy pieces. However, investing in high-quality, timeless items is a strategy that pays off in the long run, both for your wallet and your wardrobe. So the next time you’re considering whether to splurge on a timeless, high-quality fashion piece or settle for a lower-priced, lower-quality item, remember that sometimes, you truly do get what you pay for.

Let me know in the comments below if you’ve chosen something a little more pricy but that you’ve worn so many times now that the cost-per-wear is down to pennies! I’d love to hear about your fashion successes. 🙂

Why knowing your natural hair type can help save time & money https://cassiefairy.com/2025/01/17/why-knowing-your-natural-hair-type-can-help-save-time-money/ https://cassiefairy.com/2025/01/17/why-knowing-your-natural-hair-type-can-help-save-time-money/#respond Fri, 17 Jan 2025 11:47:24 +0000 https://cassiefairy.com/?p=54445 Collaborative feature

If you’ve struggled to style your hair in the past and haven’t been able to achieve a natural look, there may be something simple that you can change in your hair styling routine in order to make it easier to tame your mane. Just knowing a little more about your natural hair type can be beneficial if you’re on a budget because you can cut out the cost of buying styling products that you don’t need!

Plus, these factors will have an impact on what methods you should use and what tools will work best. Whether you’re considering buying a new high-performance hair dryer, straighteners, waving tool, curling iron or any other kind of heat-styling device, these are the things you’ll need to consider:

Your own hair type

We all have different types of hair – in terms of thickness, colour, natural curl or wave, whether or not it has been dyed and so on. But did you know that each type of hair should be treated differently when it comes to styling?

Once you know what hair type you have, you can treat it in the correct way to get the most out of the way it naturally moves. There are hair type quizzes online that you can take to determine the density, curl pattern or coarseness of your hair.

Knowing what your hair type is allows you to shop for haircare and styling products that will enhance the look of your hair rather than weighing it down or allowing it to be too fluffy. For example, I’ve only just discovered that my own curly hair type is 2A, whereas bouncy curly weaves might be closer to hair types 3 or 4. This means, for my 2A hair type I should use light mousses and volume-boosting shampoos in order to prevent my waves from being flattened.

This can save you money in the long run because you can avoid buying styling products that won’t work with your hair type, you can minimise the number haircare items you use in your routine and, once you have a favourite product that really works, you can bulk buy it when it’s on offer to save you money in the long term.

Turn down the temperature

Having knowledge of your hair type is particularly important when it comes to using heat on your hair. While many styling tools can be boosted to super-high temperatures, you sometimes don’t need to use the hottest setting in order to set your style.

In fact, if you use too-hot plates or air, it can have the opposite effect on your hair that you’re trying to achieve; a smoothed-down look becomes frizzy or curls drop out quickly. So choosing an amika hair styler that offers temperature control means you can use the correct heat for your hair type.

I previously found out that my hair would hold a curl better if the temperature of my styling tool was turned down from 220ºC to around 150ºC. Knowing your hair type can also reduce the styling time needed to achieve the natural look you want because you’re working with your natural texture, not against it.

Choose the correct cut

If you know your hair type, you can choose a cut that enhances the way it naturally moves. Some hair types look great when left long but others will benefit from being trimmed shorter to give you a natural volume boost.

Again, having a haircut that works with your natural hair rather than against it will save you time and effort while styling. This is because you can skip the step of adding in extra volume with a hair dryer or hot brush – the volume will already be naturally present.

Likewise, cutting layers into your style may mean that you don’t need to curl your hair at all – the waves may simply bounce into place as your hair air dries or while using a diffuser at a low temperature. Or, you may benefit from adding extra volume with human hair extensions; be sure to check out the best hair weave recommendations to choose hair with a similar texture and curl to your natural hair type.

I hope these tips will help you to achieve a naturally styled look for a fraction of the cost and in less time than before. Of course, I can’t add styling, cut and product recommendations for every hair type here, as it would be a very long article. But, once you know your hair type, you can easily change your styling routine to make the most of how your hair naturally behaves.

Please let me know what has worked for you in the comments below. Thanks!

Simple steps for healthy skin and minimal makeup https://cassiefairy.com/2025/01/08/simple-steps-for-healthy-skin-and-minimal-makeup/ https://cassiefairy.com/2025/01/08/simple-steps-for-healthy-skin-and-minimal-makeup/#respond Wed, 08 Jan 2025 09:25:56 +0000 https://cassiefairy.com/?p=54393 Collaborative feature

Isn’t it a lovely thought be able to achieve natural radiance without heavy layers of make-up? At this time of year many of us can feel like our skin becomes more dry or blemished. This is mostly down to the drop in temperature and constantly changing environments, like going from harsh freezing air into warm, dry, stuffy homes.

A Clean Canvas

Your first step towards a flawless complexion is to start with clean, hydrated skin. Of course, this means drinking plenty of water to hydrate from the inside out. At this time of year, you may find that you’re drinking less water and favouring hot drinks like coffee, tea and hot chocolate instead to warm you up. So add a few more glasses of water to give your skin a helping hand – thorough hydration is a must to keep your skin looking plump and healthy.

Next, daily cleansing to remove any dirt and impurities is crucial to maintaining a clear complexion. But don’t use harsh products that strip the natural oils from your skin – instead, choose a sensitive skin face wash and follow this with a quality moisturiser that suits your skin type. A vitamin C serum with hyaluronic acid will help to lock moisture in, too.

And don’t forget the sunscreen. Yes, even in the winter, your skin can be damaged and dried out by the sun. Just picture those freezing mornings when you’ve left the house in the dark and then the sun comes up and suddenly it’s blazing on your face. Exposure like this without protection won’t be any good for your skin’s health. There’s no need to break out the tropical sunblock products you’d used on holiday – just choose a moisturiser with SPF built-in.

All about that base

After hydrating, a high-quality foundation can be your best friend. But give your skin the chance to breathe and shine through by choosing a light to medium coverage formulation or even a BB cream for a natural look. Once you’ve found a foundation to match your skin’s undertones and texture, go easy applying it and remember that the aim of this base layer is to cover minor imperfections and even out your skin – not create a heavy mask!

Use a versatile tool like a beauty sponge or soft brush to blend your foundation into your skin seamlessly – or pat it in with clean fingertips for a natural-looking finish. That’s an important point too = make sure your brushes, sponges, tools and hands are all completely clean to avoid future blemishes. It’s a good idea to regularly clean and air-dry your applicators to keep them fresh. You can use clean swabs to tidy up sensitive areas around your eyes, too.

Strategic highlights

An illuminating cream or powder highlighter can give your skin a fresh dewy glow, allowing you to fake it til you make it! Lightly sweep it on the high points of your face – the tops of your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, and just above your cupid’s bow. Don’t go for anything too glittery and you may need to experiment with a few products before you find the right one that looks natural on your face and gives the impression of healthy, well-rested skin.

Minimal Eye Makeup

When aiming for a minimalistic and natural ‘no makeup’ look, go easy on your eyes. Just a light sweep of mascara will make your lashes look longer and more defined, enhancing your eyes without overdoing it. Avoid using liquid or pencil eyeliner for a softer more natural style – you can add a little eyeshadow in neutral shades instead.

However, for a touch of definition that helps to subtly lift the face, a brow pencil could serve a dual purpose. It not only fills up any sparse spots in your eyebrows and defines them, but it can also help to accentuate your bone structure and draw attention to your eyes. Remember, minimalistic beauty isn’t about making yourself look different; rather, it is about accentuating your features and highlighting your natural beauty.

Subtle and soft lips

Finish your look with a swipe of lip colour that complements your skin tone. Professional makeup artists recommend choosing a shade that’s one or two shades deeper than your natural lip colour. I personally prefer a tinted lip balm so that my lips are moisturised too – which is essential in the cold winter months when lips become easily chapped. Likewise, sheer lipstick will add just the right amount of colour without appearing too bold or dramatic.

Weekly Exfoliation

Wrap up your skincare routine by giving yourself a weekly pamper to gently exfoliate your skin. This helps to remove dead skin cells that can make your skin look flaky or dull. Be sure to select a very gentle exfoliator that won’t irritate your skin and don’t overdo it – just once a week is more than enough for most skin types.

I hope these simple steps will help you to enjoy healthy-looking and feeling skin throughout the winter. Having fresh skin with minimal makeup is not only achievable but also easier to maintain with the right essentials. By following these tips, you will not only improve the health and appearance of your skin but you can also save money by reducing the number of products you use and save time by needing to apply less makeup. It’s a win-win!

Please let me know your tips for healthy skin and fresh makeup in the comments below. I’d love to hear what natural, vegan and cruelty-free products you’ve discovered and would recommend. 🙂

Step-by-step flower embroidery guide to upcycle and customise your clothing https://cassiefairy.com/2024/11/08/step-by-step-flower-embroidery-guide-to-upcycle-and-customise-your-clothing/ https://cassiefairy.com/2024/11/08/step-by-step-flower-embroidery-guide-to-upcycle-and-customise-your-clothing/#respond Fri, 08 Nov 2024 13:32:25 +0000 https://cassiefairy.com/?p=54078 Some items have been gifted

If you’ve got an old piece of clothing that you want to revamp, it’s a great idea to add a touch of embroidery. This not only allows you to cover up any marks or pulls in order to give your shirt, jacket or jeans a new lease of life, but it allows you to customise your clothing, making it truly personal to you.

It’s also a lovely idea to use embroidery if you’re making a gift for someone special; I’ve previously been given beautiful embroidered hoops as special gifts from my talented friends and I really appreciate the time, effort and love they’ve put into the pieces.

Inspired by traditional Mexican embroidery, this motif is designed to fit on the yoke of a blouse, or around the neckline, and looks most effective when embroidered with colourful threads. If your shirt or blouse doesn’t look like the one in the photograph, the motif can easily be adapted to fit.

And, of course, you could use any fabric item you like – from pillowcases and tablecloths to trouser pockets or shirt cuffs – just adapt the design to fit the space you have available.

You will need:

  • Cotton shirt or blouse
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Crewel (embroidery) needle
  • Permanent or erasable marker
  • DMC six-stranded thread in these colours:
  • fern green 703
  • forget-me-not-blue 794
  • poppy 606
  • orange 740
  • amethyst 553
  • bubblegum 956
  • sunshine yellow 444

Stitches used: chain stitch, French knot, satin stitch, split stitch

This motif can be used on a variety of different garments. Here it has been added to a shirt, either side of the front button fastening. It would look equally good on the bodice of a plain dress and could easily be adapted to a child’s dress. This shirt has pintucks, creating a textured surface, but this is not an obstacle to adding embroidery: you do not need to start with smooth fabric.

Here’s the template for you to save and print for this project:

Flower Embroidery by Susie Johns, GMC Publications, RRP £16.99

Step 1

Trace or transfer the Mexican blouse motif from page 81 on to the left-hand side of the shirt, reversing it for the right-hand side. You can use a ballpoint pen, as all the lines should be covered by embroidery stitches, or an erasable marker if you prefer. Position the design high on the yoke, above the bustline.

Step 2

Select your colours and place the fabric in an embroidery hoop. You will need a small hoop that can be moved from place to place to work on different areas of the design. Work the stems in chain stitch, using fern green 703. Use two strands of thread throughout the project.

Step 3

Fill in the leaf shapes with satin stitch using forget-me-not blue 794. Start by working a few stitches down the length of the shape before working the satin stitches close together across the shape; this will help to ensure good coverage.

Step 4

Use poppy 606 and orange 740 for the petals of the top flower. Work the stamens in split stitch using two strands of amethyst 553, with the anthers in satin stitch using sunshine yellow 444. Still using sunshine yellow 444, fill in the flower centres of the three smaller flowers, then use amethyst 553 for the petals.

Step 5

For the remaining large flower, fill in the petals using satin stitch and bubblegum 956. For the two smaller flowers, fill in the centres in sunshine yellow 444 then complete the petals using poppy 606. Using orange 740, fill in the circles in satin stitch, leaving a small gap in the centre. Finally, work a French knot in the centre of each, using sunshine yellow 444. Work the two sides of the blouse to match.

And there you have it – a beautiful embroidery design to prettify any piece of clothing you have. This gorgeous project has been kindly provided by Susie Johns and is taken from her amazing Flower Embroidery book.

Where to find sustainable & sassy gym gear from cruelty-free companies https://cassiefairy.com/2024/07/15/where-to-find-sustainable-sassy-gym-gear-from-cruelty-free-companies/ https://cassiefairy.com/2024/07/15/where-to-find-sustainable-sassy-gym-gear-from-cruelty-free-companies/#respond Mon, 15 Jul 2024 11:16:06 +0000 https://cassiefairy.com/?p=53511

Some items have been gifted

I’ve recently been stocking up on gym gear. Although I don’t actually go to the gym, I do a lot of running, walking and online classes including dance, Zumba, tai chi and much more. In fact, I try to do some movement every day – 150 minutes of physical activity is recommended each week – which is beneficial for good health now and helps with longevity of life.

Whether you’re already a regular at the gym or are just starting out, you’ll certainly need a few essentials to wear while you’re training, such as a comfortable tee, joggers and trainers. When I first got started, I just had one pair of leggings and a loose top that I would wash and wear. But now I need more so that I can do more – and those old supermarket-brand leggings are now full of holes haha!

I started researching workout wear from some great ethical clothing companies. I’d previously been gifted a couple of tees from Vegan Outfitters and The Spark Company (the embroidered t-shirts above) and these brands have been my go-to when browsing for casual wear and, now, gym gear. I enjoy their quirky embroidered designs and personality-packed prints – it’s funny, sassy stuff!

So, I’ve been shopping for more t-shirts and airy vests. In organic cotton with eco-friendly dyes, they are a planet-friendly option that also offers freshness and breathability while you’re exercising. I’m happy with the unisex fit, which looks great with the sleeves rolled up. I’m the kind of person that finds something that works and then buys one in every colour so I’ll be shopping for more of these lovely soft tops soon.

Another bonus for me is that the prints are created using water-based inks, making them kinder to the planet. And any of the embroidered products are made to order for zero-waste. From my own experience with my Vegan Outfitters bee t-shirt and my glittery Queen of Hearts tee from The Spark Company, the embroidery is top-notch quality.

I’ve become a fan of these brands because all their sweatshirts and joggers are ethically made and PETA-approved, which is important to me in my quest for a cruelty-free life. Also, they offer unisex designs so anyone can wear the garments. I like the idea of sharing a hoody with my husband – a medium would fit him perfectly and be super-cosy and slouchy on me, ideal for throwing on for outdoor training sessions.

Also, I can’t forget to grab a cotton cap. I’ve found this is essential if you’re walking or jogging outdoors to shade your eyes and protect the top of your head when the sun is shining. Of course, always wear SPF for outdoor sessions and check the application guidelines on the product as you may need to reapply after sweating, swimming or wiping with a towel.

Finally, I chatted with the brands when they gifted me a couple of tops and have organised a money-off code for you so please use CASSIE5 for a 5% discount on all products from The Spark Company and Vegan Outfitters. Plus, The Spark Company is currently running an offer for their pride campaign till the end of August 2024 so use PRIDE24 for 10% off pride products – hope this helps!

Let me know what essentials you’ve found that you need for your gym kit in the comments below. Maybe you need a tote or drawstring bag, sports socks or a beanie for outdoor sessions? Plus, I’d love to hear what activities you’ve been doing and find out if there are any new exercise options I can try so please let me know! 🙂
